The Story Wines, helmed by winemaker Rory Lane, sources grapes from various regions in Victoria, including The Grampians, Westgate and elsewhere, continuing to captivate with elegant and expressive releases. This Wine Scoffer has long been a fan of Rory Lane, who has a degree in ancient Greek Literature rather than Oenology, and his sublime and curious imagination. He has an innate knack for weaving elegance with that imagination.
Elegant indeed is the 2021 Super G blend made up of 42% Grenache, 40% Syrah, and 18% Mourvèdre. Described as both smooth and bold, it balances juicy acidity and supple tannins with aromatic bursts of violet, clove, and cinnamon. Red raspberry notes carry through to a long, satisfying finish, making it a refined take on the classic GSM style.
Lifted floral aromatics of violet, rose petal, and fresh herbs woven through with the juicy red raspberries and spices give this wine its lovely depth of character. On the palate, the wine is vibrant yet composed, with Grenache lending juicy red fruit and brightness, Syrah contributing spice and structure, and Mourvèdre grounding the blend with earthy depth and a supple, savoury backbone.
The texture is all velvety and sumptuous with fine, integrated tannins and refreshing acidity carrying through to a long, polished finish. While undeniably bold, Super G never overreaches, maintaining that graceful, medium-bodied profile that speaks to both thoughtful winemaking and expressive terroir.
While it’s drinking beautifully now, it shows potential for further development as it has a little lie down in the cellar. The Super G is proof Rory Lane can not only tell compelling varietal stories, but he crafts seamless blends that sing in harmony. His minimal intervention approach allows the region’s granitic soils and cool climate to express themselves, creating wines that are as thoughtful as they are drinkable.
